Check out this trailer first:

So what’s Things We Lost in the Fire [HD DVD] all about?

“Dad, what does ‘fluorescent’ mean?” asks a winsome young Dory of his doting dad, played by David Duchovny. Pondering a moment, dad answers, “It means, ‘lit from within.” “So Dad, am I fluorescent?’” “Yes, Dory, you are.” The touching, brief moment telegraphs the bond Duchovny’s character, Brian, has with his family, including wife Audrey (Halle Berry) and daughter Harper (Alexis Llewellyn), and the love that radiates through and around him. When tragedy strikes early in the film, Berry and the children must acknowledge, and somehow heal, the hole left in their lives. And in that human effort, so little explored in American films, Things We Lost in the Fire holds a luminous candle to the hope left in life–sometimes when all that seems to be left is hope. Directed by the talented Danish director Susanne Bier (Brothers), Fire is allowed to unfold almost in real time as grief washes over the family, and Berry gives one of her most memorable performances, captured mostly in tiny details that will hit the viewer in the soul. Her eyes, the carriage of her head, her slim shoulders appearing to buckle under the weight of her sorrow–Berry is well directed here and shows that her performance in Monster’s Ball was no fluke. As she begins to connect with Brian’s childhood friend Jerry (Benicio Del Toro), a new family web is woven–irregular, to be sure, but strong and comforting. Other affecting performances are given by the talented charater actor John Carroll Lynch, as Brian’s friend and neighbor, and by the heartbreaking Llewellyn, an actress of stunning range for a child so young. Things We Lost in the Fire holds a torch in the deepest darkness, and lets souls connect–a rare gift indeed. –A.T. Hurley

Watch to watch The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc online?

Check out this trailer first:

So what’s The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc all about?

1999 may be remembered as the year of Joan of Arc: NBC created a miniseries in her honor, Carl Dreyer’s long-lost The Passion of Joan of Arc was discovered in a mental hospital, and Facets re-released Jacques Rivette’s Joan the Maid. Luc Besson rounds out the corpus with his stylistic and vaguely heretical grand-scale feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element) challenges established notions about the Maid of Orleans as he creates a decidedly more human heroine than have previous biopics. The story line is the same–a young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy–but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister’s giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

Cinematically, The Messenger is stunning, with fantastical sequences of Joan in communication with higher powers. Yet the graphic violence (scenes include random decapitation and a dog gnawing on a body); the uneven accents, which make it difficult to tell who is fighting on which side; and the rewriting of lore may make this version of Joan of Arc appeal only to Besson fans. Jovovich is convincing, and while at times the film may drag (at times you wish they’d hurry up and burn her), it is a remarkable and insightful retelling of a well-known piece of history. –Jenny Brown

Ok, let’s look at A Great Day in Harlem/The Spitball Story.

First, the movie is about A Great Day in Harlem (1994, 60 min.) - The story and sounds behind the most famous photo in the history of jazz. In August of 1958, in front of a Harlem brownstone, first-time photographer Art Kane assembled 57 of the greatest jazz stars of all time and snapped a picture that would live forever. Narrated by Quincy Jones, this Academy Award-nominated documentary includes interviews with nearly 30 jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey, home movies, and rare performance footage. The Spitball Story (1997, 21 min.) - A short film about the firing of Dizzy Gillespie by Cab Calloway for one too many practical jokes..

I really enjoyed the performace of Milt Hinton and Milt Hinton. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Jonah Jones (II), Milt Hinton, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins.

From the early race to build gliders to the D-Day invasion at Normandy and Nazi Germany’s final surrender, Silent Wings - The American Glider Pilots of WWII narrated by Hal Holbrook, reveals the critical role gliders played in World War II offensives. Through rare archival footage and photographs, the film places the audience right at the center of the action in the dangerous world of the American glider pilot.

During WWII, 6000 young Americans volunteered to fly large unarmed cargo gliders into battle. For these glider pilots every mission was do-or-die. It was their task to repeatedly risk their lives landing the men and tools of war deep within enemy-held territory, often in complete darkness, using only a stopwatch to navigate.

Thousands of lives were saved and battles won because of their efforts. In fact, one pilot interviewed said - the ‘G’ in their emblem didn’t stand for glider; it stood for ‘guts’.

So what’s Soccer Dog - The Movie all about?

If you can accept the premise of a soccer-crazy town deep in this country’s heartland–complete with a game-fixing Mafioso dad, then you can buy this story of a talented dog who brings a boy and his adoptive father together and helps the team win the championship. Kids in the 6-10 range will enjoy the comeuppances received by a kid bully, maniacal dog catcher, drill sergeant coach, and buffoon coach, even as adults may wince at the stereotypes. –Kimberly Heinrichs

Personally, I thought James Marshall was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Olivia d’Abo.
